Description: Before installing Windows Media Player 11Before you install this beta release of Windows Media Player 11, do the following: * Back up your existing data. To use the Backup Utility in Windows XP, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Backup. * Go to Windows Update and install any high-priority updates that are available for your computer. * If you have a Creative ZEN device, see Issues updating firmware on Creative ZEN portable devices after installing Windows Media Player 11. Computer must be connected to the Internet to install Windows Media Player 11 Your computer must be connected to the Internet to install Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 for Windows XP. Installing the Player on Windows XP Media Center Edition This release of the Player supports Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Update Rollup 2; however, it does not support previous releases of Windows XP Media Center Edition. If you have Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, but have not installed Update Rollup 2, you must go to Windows Update and install Update Rollup 2 before you can install Windows Media Player 11. Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP cannot be installed on computers running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2002 or Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. Media sharing requires extra steps before installing Windows Media Player 11 on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Media sharing might not work as expected when using Xbox 360 or a digital media receiver to play shared digital media after installing Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. This issue might occur on a computer that is running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 and connected to a Windows Media Center Extender device, such as Xbox 360. If you are using an Xbox 360 with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, this issue might be avoided by performing the following procedure before installing Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. 1. On Xbox 360, use the game controller to select the system blade, and then select Computers. 2. Select Windows Media Center. 3. Select Disconnect. 4. Install Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. 5. Start Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP and verify that Windows Media Player 11 is properly configured to share digital media content with your device. If your Media Center PC was not disconnected from Xbox 360 before Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP was installed and media sharing does not work as expected, follow the steps in the procedure above, which includes reinstalling Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. What's new in this beta release compared to the first beta release of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP? The following list highlights some of the major changes since the first beta release of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. * Fixing issues. Fixes have been made for issues that occurred in the first beta release of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. * Additional online stores are now available. More online stores are available in this beta release of Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP. For a listing of online stores that are now available, see Availability of online stores. * Changes to sharing digital media content. The functionality of Windows Media Connect is now integrated into Windows Media Player 11 Beta 2 for Windows XP as the new Media Sharing feature, which lets you enjoy the contents of your Windows Media Player library from anywhere in your home. If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices such as Xbox 360 or other digital media receivers. Note that digital media sharing is targeted for home users; therefore, computers that are joined to a domain might experience issues when trying to share digital media. Rolling back to a previous version of the Player Windows Media Player is a feature of the Windows operating system and cannot be removed entirely. However, in Windows XP, you can roll back to the version of the Player that was previously on your computer. You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to perform the following procedure. 1. Disconnect any portable music or video devices that might be attached to your computer. 2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 3. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program. 4. Click Windows Media Player 11, and then click Remove. If Windows Media Player 11 is not displayed in the list of currently installed programs, then try the following: 1. At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box. 2. In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Player 11, and then click Change/Remove. 5. In each of the two confirmation dialog boxes that appear, click OK. 6. When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes), click Restart. 7. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 8. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program. 9. Click Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then click Remove. If Windows Media Format 11 Runtime is not displayed in the list of currently installed programs, then try the following: 1. At the top of the list, select the Show updates check box. 2. In the Windows XP - Software Updates section, click Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then click Change/Remove. If you installed a non-US English version of Windows Media Player 11, the instructions in the dialog boxes that are mentioned in steps 9, 10, and 11 might appear in English. 10. In the first confirmation dialog box that appears, click OK. 11. In the second confirmation dialog box that appears, select the Do you want to continue with the rollback? check box, and then click OK. 12. When the rollback process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Restart. 13. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 14. In the Category View of Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Remove a program. 15. Click Microsoft User-Mode Driver Framework Feature Pack 1.0.0, and then click Remove. 16. Follow the instructions that appear in the Software Update Removal Wizard. If the Wudf01000 confirmation dialog box appears, click Yes to continue. When the software removal process is complete (it might take several minutes to complete), click Finish. Note If you remove Windows Media Player 11 and the Windows Media Format 11 Runtime, and then encounter error C00D271D ("A problem has occurred in the Digital Rights Management component. Contact Microsoft product support."), you might be able to resolve the problem by installing the Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime. For information about installing the Runtime, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 891122, "Update for Windows Media Digital Rights Management-enabled players." You might not be able to roll back to a previous version of the Player if the hidden folder $NtUninstallwmp11$ is deleted from your computer. Some non-Microsoft programs (such as CCleaner) delete this folder in an attempt to remove unwanted files from your computer. Must uninstall and reinstall URGE when upgrading from Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP to Windows Media Player 11 in Windows Vista If your computer is running the Windows XP operating system with Windows Media Player 11 for Windows XP installed and you upgrade to the Windows Vista operating system, you must uninstall and then reinstall URGE in Microsoft Windows Vista to use the URGE online store in Windows Media Player 11 in Windows Vista. To uninstall URGE in Windows Vista 1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel. 2. In Control Panel, under Programs, click Uninstall a program. 3. Click URGE, and then click Uninstall. 4. In the Programs and Features dialog box, click Yes to confirm that you want to uninstall URGE. To reinstall URGE in Windows Media Player 11 in Windows Vista 1. Click Start, and then click Windows Media Player. 2. Click the arrow below the Online Stores tab, and then click URGE. 3. Follow the steps to install URGE. |
